How Can I Attract Bees and Butterflies to My Garden?
Written by: Izzie Lister
Maybe it's the sight of a bee disappearing into a lavender bush, or a butterfly flying across a flower bed on a warm afternoon, whatever it is - those little moments make a garden feel truly alive.
Over the years, many garden-lovers such as myself, have noticed fewer pollinators visiting their outdoor spaces. Habitat loss, changing weather patterns and modern gardening practices have all played a part. The good news is that even small changes can make a real difference!
Flowers & What They Want
You don't need sprawling acres of wildflower meadows to attract our flying friends. In fact, according to the BBKA (The British Beekeepers Association), a few well-chosen plants and some thoughtful finishing touches can be enough to encourage bees, butterflies and other creepy crawlies to stop by.
Plants such as echinacea, buddleia, cosmos, salvia and rudbeckia are all known for drawing pollinators into the garden. Ideally choose a mixture of flowers that bloom throughout spring, summer and autumn. Rather than planting flowers individually, try grouping similar plants together in larger planters, like this honeycomb style. Large clusters of colour are often easier for insects to spot and can encourage them to spend more time in your garden once they arrive.
During warmer months, bees and butterflies can struggle to find safe places to drink. A shallow dish filled with water and a handful of pebbles creates a simple landing area where pollinators can safely stop for a drink. A great way to do this is via birdbaths. Stake-style designs are particularly handy, as they can be placed almost anywhere in the garden – even tucked into a large flower planter. If you have the space for a small pond, you'll likely find even more wildlife arriving, from dragonflies to birds and frogs.

Decorations - The Added Touches
As your garden becomes more welcoming to wildlife, it's natural to want your decorative choices to reflect that connection with nature too.
Many gardeners choose bee-themed ornaments, butterfly decorations or dragonfly garden stakes to celebrate the wildlife they hope to attract. These little details can help bring personality to flower beds and borders whilst complementing the natural beauty of the garden itself. If you're looking to add the finishing touches to your outdoor space, explore our collection of themed decorations to bring even more charm to your garden.

Attracting bees and butterflies is something that you can affect quickly. A few extra flowers here, a source of water there, perhaps a small corner left to grow a little wild...Before long, you'll start noticing more movement amongst the borders. More buzzing around your flower beds. More butterflies dancing through the garden on sunny afternoons.
